This category is composed of patterns which are rather elaborate and detailed, where the motifs blend and intertwine with one another. An examination of the structure of these patterns reveals both Renaissance and Neoclassical influences. Other motifs are structured with a geometric base, within which the decorative work is dense and closely packed. The irresistible charm of the Acanthus (also known as brank-ursine or bear’s breech), a green perennial with rose-shaped leaves found in the Mediterranean area, is visible in the still-surviving decorative work on Ionic columns. The Acanthus constitutes a fundamental motif in many ornamental designs which feature arabesques and other decorative flourishes.
